Love, Rivalry, & Magic!
This glass artwork was based on the theme of A Midsummer Night's Dream (tied in with the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death), commissioned for Enchanted Parks 2016, an after-dark arts adventure, developed and commissioned by Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative and Gateshead Council and produced by Manchester International Arts.

Love triangles and rivalries between human and fairy characters are further complicated by the use of magic!
Fairy characters are visible when viewers walk by the piece as their edges catch the light, yet when viewed from the front they are almost invisible.

I designed this using Photoshop from 32 layers which took approximately 1 week.
The work consists of x18 separate designs, screen-printed with high fire enamels on 5 panels of glass. Each leaf was individually brushed on.

‘Love, Rivalry and Magic! by Daniel Rollitt, a University of Sunderland student, was what Mary Berry might call the “showstopper” piece. It depicted a scene from one of Shakespeare’s most popular works, where love, rivalry and magic meet in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The layering of the glass, the colour and the fact that visually as you moved around the piece, it slightly changed and offered a real depth. I loved it…The time, the skill, the patience behind this piece, is just mesmerising.’
