WHERE ART MEETS CRAFT
Fleeting Cherry Blossoms
This artwork represents the brief flowering period of ornamental cherry trees. Often only lasting for 2-weeks each year, they symbolise impermanence and renewal. Global temperature increase threatens these blooms, potentially disrupting the seasonal cycle in nature, as well as tourism in Japan.
Glass is often thought of as fragile and is used to demonstrate the vulnerability of these blossoms.
Each flower is comprised from individual petals, fused together, and shaped using heat. With global gold price at an all-time high, the glass colours haven’t just doubled in monetary costs, but have also been restricted production-wise, making the blossoms created here even more precious.
