Anthropomorphized Waves Project (5 works)
My final degree project is based upon my observations of oceanic waves. Thinking how other cultures interpret the world and share this using myths, my aim was to anthropomorphize waves in my own way by ascribing figurative forms to waves. I was also inspired by a documentary about Kami, elemental spirits in Shinto religion.
After exploring various wave forms, I focused on the motion involved both above and below the sea's surface. By exploring positive and negative space I incorporated the figures into the material of water itself suggesting it is comprised of them, similar to Frederick Hart’s work Order Out Of Chaos on the Western Facade of the National Cathedral in Washington DC.
Different perspectives as well as the depth of glass reveals and conceals the spirits questioning their existence. The figures become caught up in the swirling motion losing all control. This speaks partly of humans’ attempts to control nature and our own limits or downfall.
